What Most Realtors Do
They avoid any topics on social media where they have to share their personal beliefs and values:
- Religion
- Politics
- Raising children
- Etc.
Why This Doesn't Work
I heard a quote that said:
"If you haven't offended anyone by 12 o'clock, you're not marketing hard enough!"
We're in an industry where business gets done with people we like, know, and trust.
The more values you share, the more people gravitate towards you.
On the flip side, the more values you share, the more some people may start to dislike you.
For example, the election finished earlier this month.
Some of my realtor friends were celebrating when they found out Trump won.
In the comments, I saw other realtors bashing the person's character.
Guess where those people aren't sending their referrals?
But there were some realtors in the comments who were also celebrating.
Guess where they're sending every referral now?
See, you're already upsetting people just by being who you are.
Might as well get paid for it!
Because no matter what you believe and stand for, someone will always believe the opposite.
You can't make everyone happy.
Being inclusive with your marketing doesn't work for small business owners.
Unless you have a multi-billion-dollar advertising budget like Apple or Coca-Cola.
What I Would Do Instead
Now, I'm not saying start an argument on a controversial topic.
Or to share everything about your personal life.
What I'm saying is find ways to be bold with your marketing.
Instead of saying:
"Here's why you should buy a home in 2025."
This is very neutral, very bland, very generic.
Say:
"Here's why renting is the stupidest thing you can do in 2025."
Or
"If I were still renting in 2025, I would hate my life, and here's why."
Now think about whatever you believe to be true:
- Do you believe in home ownership?
- Is the 'American Dream' still alive?
- Is buying a home a scam the banks created to make more money and keep us in debt?
Make a list and dare to take a bold stance.
Other people already think about these topics but are too afraid to share.
You can become their spokesperson.
Why This Works
No one in history has ever made an impact by being merely liked or disliked.
You either have to be loved or hated! For example:
- Trump — Loved by Republicans. Hated by Democrats.
- Hitler — Loved by Germans. Hated by Jews
- Jesus Christ — Loved by his disciples. Hated by Pharisees.
You get the picture
The less time you spend on the fence being passive and neutral, and the more time you spend leaning into who you are,
The more money you'll make and the more fun you'll have making it.
